Vitiligo Treatment

Vitiligo is a condition causing de-pigmentation on particular parts on the skin. It becomes obvious when melanocytes die off or become dysfunctional. These cells are usually responsible for giving the skin its tone and pigmentation, with the cause for vitiligo yet to be established. Some researchers have shown that this condition may draw its roots from autoimmune, genetic, neurological or stress. The most obvious symptom of vitiligo is de-pigmentation of skin parts, mostly on extremities. Despite these areas may be small in the beginning, they commonly spread and change shape over time.

Reputable treatment methods

There are many types of treatment for vitiligo treatment, with most efficient being divided into four groups: UVB and PUVA phototherapy as well as melanocytes transplantation and skin masking.

UVB phototherapy is the most common treatment method used to deal with this condition. You can also receive this particular treatment at home with a domestic UVB lamp or you can get it done in an institution. Depending on how severe the skin changes are, the size and power of the lamp may vary. This treatment can last to a couple of months and if there are no benefits to be reported from this type of treatment, other methods need to be used.

PUVA phototherapy is usually applied in special hospitalized institutions. PUVA stands for a specific type of ultraviolet light which is a therapy that also includes taking specific medications to increase skin’s sensitivity to this particular type of light. It is necessary to do this treatment twice per week for about one year or longer, depending on how much of an effect it shows. Unfortunately, these therapies may show signs similar to those experienced during excessive sunbathes such as sunburn etc.

Melanocytes transplantation was successfully performed in 1992, when it was published and confirmed as a valid method of treatment for vitiligo. This is a process which includes using a very thin layer of pigmented skin from the gluteus area. Here, the melanocytes are divided into cellular suspensions which are known to attach and multiply in proper conditions. The treated area is then cared for with special preparations. About 80% of patients who went under this procedure have shown excellent results and a complete re-pigmentation of the skin under the influence of vitiligo.

Skin masking is a commonly used procedure in case of mild symptoms – this basically includes proper make-up or other cosmetic preparations, which simply hides the de-pigmented skin. Obviously, this is not a proper treatment method and can be used for special cases where you need to hide the problem in a short while.

Alternative treatment methods

A couple of months ago, European researchers have reported a discovery of a new treatment method for vitiligo – modified pseudocatalysis. This specific ingredient has shown positive effects against treating vitiligo affected skin. When treated with this substance, the whole skin shows significant improvements in its overall health, appearance and condition which was promised by a lot of other alternative products you can get at this point.
